American Planning Association Designates
Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood
a Top 10 Great Neighborhood for 2011
Neighborhood Noted for Built/Natural Environments and Engaged Ctizenry

Hattiesburg–The American Planning Association (APA) announced on Tuesday, Oct. 4 the designation of Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2011 under the organization’s Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value.

APA singled out Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood for its sensitivity to and emphasis of the natural environment, outstanding architecture – including one of the best collections of Victorian-era houses in the state, and residents’ esprit de corps. It is the unique way in which these elements coalesce that evokes a consistent and charming sense of place.

“As one of Hattiesburg’s oldest neighborhoods and one of Mississippi’s treasured historic neighborhoods, Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood is a vital component to the Hattiesburg Community,” said Councilman Dave Ware, Hattiesburg City Council. “Thru the efforts of preservation and community involvement, Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association serves as an example of what neighbors can accomplish when they work together and support a strong neighborhood association.”

“While we have always known that the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood is one of the Great Neighborhoods in America, it’s rewarding to get this national recognition,” said Andrea Saffle, Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association President. “This award is truly a tribute to the HHN Association founders who worked so hard to protect and preserve the neighborhood that we enjoy today.”

Through Great Places in America, APA recognizes unique and exemplary streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces – three essential components of all communities. These authentic places have been shaped by forward thinking planning that showcases diverse architectural styles, promotes community involvement and accessibility, and fosters economic opportunity.

APA Great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live every day.  Since APA began Great Places in America in 2007, 50 neighborhoods, 50 streets and 40 public spaces have been designated in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Read more.
