City to Honor Fallen Officers

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg will hold it's annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 16 at 10 a.m., on the lawn of the Hattiesburg Police Department headquarters. The ceremony falls on National Police Week. Mayor Johnny L. DuPree will present a proclamation during the event which honors fallen officers. The proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS, the Congress and President of the United States of America have designate May 16th as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and the week in which May 16 falls as National Police Week; and
 
WHEREAS, the members of the law enforcement agency of the City of Hattiesburg play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedom of Hattiesburg; and

WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of their law enforcement agency, and that members of our law enforcement agency recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression; and

WHEREAS, the men and women of the law enforcement agency of the City of Hattiesburg unceasingly provide a vital public service; and

NOW THEREFORE, I, JOHNNY L. DUPREE, Mayor of the City of Hattiesburg, call upon all citizens and upon all patriotic, civic and educational organizations to observe the week of May 13-19, 2012, Police Week, with appropriate ceremonies and observances in which all of our faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, have rendered a dedicated service to their communities and, in so doing, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.

 I further call upon all citizens of the City of Hattiesburg to observe Wednesday, May 16, 2012, Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg and South Central Community Action Agency urge low-income residents in Forrest, Lamar and Marion counties to take advantage of the Weatherization Assistance program which reduces electric bills and safety hazards.

Caseworkers from the Mississippi Department of Human Services--Division of Community Services will accept applications at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center from 9:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 17. 

The program improves the conditions of the homes of eligible low-income citizens, especially the elderly, disabled and families with small children. It reduces the amount of energy required to heat or cool a home, saves energy dollars, and addresses health and safety concerns. Energy conservation measures funded by the program range from checking all major appliances to air sealing and attic insulation. 

People interested in participating in the program should bring the following items to avoid a delay in the application process:

• Picture ID (Driver’s license) for everyone in the home over the age of 18
• Social Security Card for everyone in the home
• Birth Certificate for everyone in the home
• Deed to your home
• Proof of insurance (welcomed but not required)
• Proof of income for the past thirty days (for everyone)
• Light bill and gas bill

Sigler Senior Center Offers Senior Prom, Yoga and More in May

Hattiesburg- The City of Hattiesburg Department of Parks and Recreation's Senior Prom 2012 was a huge hit on Tuesday, May 8.  Adults age 50 and over mingled, ate, took lots of pictures  and danced to the tunes of The Classics at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center. For a peek at some of the other unique events Parks and Recreation has on tap this month, click here.

Fire Hydrant Testing

Hattiesburg-When it comes to extinguishing fires, one second could mean the difference between life and death. To ensure a positive outcome when responding to fires, City of Hattiesburg Fire Officials are dedicating the next couple of weeks to testing fire hydrants throughout the area.

"The safety of our citizens means everything to us," said Fire Chief David Webster, who's overseeing the annual hydrant testing which began in April and will last until the end of June.

City of Hattiesburg Unveils Recycling Program

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg and Waste Pro have teamed up to preserve the environment via a new recycling program. Beginning January 2, 2012, Waste Pro will offer recycling services to all residential customers within the City free of charge.

Residents are being asked to place their recently distributed, blue bins curbside by 7 a.m., on the designated pick-up days. Drop off points for recyclables are located at Kamper and Tatum Parks. The scheduled pick-up days are as follow:
• Ward 1 – Monday
• Ward 2 – Tuesday
• Ward 3 – Wednesday
• Ward 4 – Thursday
• Ward 5 – Friday

Accepted items include: office paper (non-confidential), newspapers, magazines, envelopes, cardboards, books, junk mail, file folders, aluminum cans (rinsed), tin cans (rinsed), plastic bottles (rinsed) and milk jugs (rinsed).

Unacceptable items include: plastic grocery bags, styrofoam, glass, wood, plastic toys, medical supplies, rubber, electronics, paint cans and containers with food residue. 

“With landfills across the country reaching maximum capacity, recycling is a great, alternate solution,” said Waste Pro Division Manager Reggie Collier. “We can’t wait to get started and we hope the community is just as excited for the opportunity to invest in our children’s future.”
